Welsh
Amateur Championship:
Griffiths win completes his season
By
Chris Smart - Electronic Telegraph
MATTHEW Griffiths,
from Woodlake Park, Gwent, had several reasons to celebrate when he won
the Welsh Amateur Championship in convincing
fashion at Tenby over the weekend.
An emphatic 7 and
6 victory in the 18-hole final over Richard Brookman, from Creigiau, not
only gave him the Welsh title but also ensured that the season long order-of-merit
crown was his besides a first senior cap for the September home internationals
in Northern Ireland.
Griffiths, who found
himself three down after nine holes of the morning round, swept into top
gear after lunch having forged his way into a one-hole advantage at the
halfway stage. Three up after 25, he took four of the next five holes
to triumph and was two under par in the process.
He is one of four
new caps in the Welsh side for the home internationals, which start at
Newcastle County Down on Sept 22.
