GOLFING UNION:
MATTHEWS ONLY NEW CAP
Konica
Order of Merit leader Neil Matthews is the only new cap selected
to represent Wales in the European Amateur Team Championship to
be played at Monticello Golf Club, Italy from 29th June to 3rd July
1999.
In
a a team packed with European experience, Lee Harpin is the only
player who has not played in a European Team Championship at some
level. Jamie Donaldson and Nigel Edwards both played in Portmarnock
in 1997 and will be determined to make amends for a poor showing.
Craig Williams and Neil Matthews were in Wales's victorious European
Youth Team Championship winning side last year while Ian Campbell,
a semi-finalist in last week's British Amateur Championship has
played in 3 European Boys Team Championships.
Wales
won this Championship in 1993 in the Czech Republic and the current
Welsh captain Tony Disley said: "The standard of European Golf
continues to improve, however, I feel the side we have selected
is capable of making a serious challenge in Italy."
