SCOTTISH GOLF:
SENIOR AND YOUTH COACHING

The eleven players who played for Scotland in this year's Home Internationals at Royal County Down will meet this Sunday 5th December at the Scottish National Golf Centre, Drumoig for a senior coaching session and a debrief on the 1999 season.

For Craig Heap, the highlight of his year was his win in the Scottish Championship at Cruden Bay where he underlined many years as a promising boy and youth golfer with his 7 & 5 win over Mark Loftus.

1999 was also the year when Cowglen based Loftus stamped his authority on the game with a series of top class performances including finishing 4th in the European Individual and being named as first reserve for the Walker Cup at Nairn. There, the Great Britain & Ireland side with three Scots, Lorne Kelly, David Patrick and Graham Rankin, scored a record 15-9 win over the USA team. Of the three, David Patrick, remains in the amateur ranks and it is likely he will feature in Scottish teams of the future.

Also worthy of mention is 18 year old Barry Hume of Haggs Castle, who won the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship and was only pipped for the European Individual title, finishing 2nd in a highly rated European field at Celtic Manor.

Ian Rae, the Head Golf Coach to the Scottish Golf Union, will be in charge of the training session while Scottish captain George Macgregor will head the discussion on the season just ended.

The following weekend, two youth squads each of eight players, assemble for a continuation of their winter coaching programme.
