SANDERS LEADS ENGLAND SQUAD FOR SHERRY CUP

 

English Champion, Mark Sanders, heads a strong six man England squad to contest the 72-hole Sherry Cup at Sotogrande on March 24-27.

The 24-year old Bristolian is backed by youth and experience in the shape of 1997 England champion Aran Wainwright, 23, last year's England Boys captain David Griffiths, 18 and seasoned international Colin Edwards, 335.

Two more accomplished youngsters, Mark Hilton, 21, who reached the semi-finals of the Amateur Championship at Muirfield last year and made his England debut in the Home Internationals, and Mark Side, 23, complete the line-up for the prestigious Spanish event. The team manger is Paul Jelly, the EGU's Championship Committee Secretary.

The Sherry Cup always attracts a strong international field. This year's event will be limited to 80 male and 40 female players with a cut after 36 holes, the leading 40 men and 20 women going forward to battle for the Masters Jacket and Gold Wine Goblets. Those who miss the cut will compete over 36 holes for the Silver Consolation Goblets.

Running in conjunction wit the main event will be a Nations Cup with each country nominating three players who scores will count.
