R&A APPOINT NEXT SECRETARY

 

The Chairman of the General Committee of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, Ian Webb, informed the Members at the Club's Business Meeting yesterday evening that Mr Peter Dawson will succeed Sir Michael Bonallack as Secretary of the Club.

A Scot, born in Aberdeen in 1948 of Scots parents, Peter Dawson graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1969 with an MA degree in Engineering and Business Studies.

His subsequent business career in engineering has provided over 25 years experience at Chief Executive level in large private and public companies operating within the British Isles and Europe.

Peter Dawson is an accomplished golfer, a member of the R&A since 1994, and a serving member of the Rules Committee. He currently lives in Stocksfield, Northumberland and is a Member of the Northumberland Golf Club.

Peter and his wife, Juliet, will move to St. Andrews later this year,after he joins the Secretariat on 1st June 1999.

Ian Webb commented: "The handover process from Michael Bonallack to Peter Dawson will be ongoing from June through to the Walker Cup in September. I am delighted we have appointed someone of Peter's calibre, experience and golfing background to follow on from the wonderful career Michael has had at the R&A. I am confident that Peter will build upon the excellent achievements and relationships throughout the world of golf that Michael has developed during his tenure."
