OXFORD
RETAIN KILN TROPHY IN LADIES VARSITY MATCH
After
becoming the inaugural winner of the Kiln Trophy in the Ladies Golf
Varsity match last year, Oxford retained their hold on the Trophy
by defeating Cambridge 6-3 on 15th March at Aldeburgh Golf Club,
in Suffolk.
Teams
from Oxford and Cambridge Universities played foursomes in the morning,
with Oxford narrowly ahead 2-1 (as last year). But in the afternoon,
Oxford won four of the six single matches, giving an overall result
of Oxford 6, Cambridge 3.
The
Oxford Captain - Sara Nicholson (Mansfield College) - said she was
delighted to have led the team and retained the Kiln Trophy. Cambridge
Captain - Louise Elms (Fitzwilliam College) - who was also captain
last year said, "We improved this year but it is clear that
we are going to have to make a quantum leap in our performance to
wrest the trophy from Oxford next year. Plans are already in hand."
David
Gilchrist, Chairman of Kiln, commenting on the company's sponsorship
said:
"We
are delighted to support this new sporting event between the Oxford
and Cambridge Universities Ladies Golf Clubs. The weather was very
kind to us, but the course still proved to be an excellent test
of golf.
Oxford
triumphed once again but, rather like the boat race these things
seem to go in phases and, I am sure that Cambridge will redress
the balance over the next few years.
Both
teams played well and treated the spectators to a splendid day's
golf. We look forward to next year's event."
