EXPERIENCED
TRIO CARRY ENGLAND
HOPES IN CHIBERTA
Neil
Pabari (Sale), Richard McEvoy (thorpe Hall) and Tom Whitehouse (Maxstoke
Park) have been selected to represent England in the annual Chiberta
Grand Prix near Biarritz, France on 5-7 August.
For
Pabari, 24, who will also act as Team Manager, it will be his first
England call up in the wake of some commendable performances. Ironically,
he will be returning to the scene of his most recent success when
he finished runner up in the French Amateur in Biarritz earlier
this summer.
A
former Cheshire champion, Pabarai, captained Oxford University to
victory over Cambridge four years ago, then won the President's
Putter, the annual Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society's January
competition at Rye, in 1998 and was runner up this year.
Just
two weeks ago he set a course record at his home club, Sale, with
a six-under-par 65.
McEvoy,
20, an Essex country player, reached the semi-finals of the Amateur
Championship at Royal County Down in June before losing to eventual
runner-up, Aran Wainwright by one hole.
Whitehouse,
19, has been capped at Boys level and sank a 15-foot putt for a
half that saw England achieve a clean sweep at the Boys Home Internationals
at St Andrews last August.
The
Chiberta competition is medal stroke play over 54 holes with individual
and team awards. To date the title has eluded all England teams.
