TEAMMATES
BATTLE FOR CARRIS TROPHY
All
six members of England's victorious team that lifted the European
Boys Championship last Sunday in Sweden will compete in the Carris
Trophy, the English Boys Under 18 Stroke Play Championship in Wiltshire
on 20-22 July.
In
what promises to be the best competition in the history of the event,
the draw also includes five members of the Spanish full international
side that lost to England at Walton Heath in May.
Newly-appointed
Boys captain, Nick Dougherty (Shaw Hill), will head the home challenge
at High post, near Salisbury, backed by his international teammates
Simon Robinson (Seaton Carew), Ben Welch (Weymouth), David Porter
(Stoneham), Sandeep Grewal (Hewsall) and Scott Godfrey (St Enodoc),
the defending champion.
Godfrey
took the title a year ago at Whittington Heath by five shots from
Porter and Robinson, while the field also includes Eren Behcet (Langley
Park), who earned his first international cap when he was picked
for the England Under-16 team against Italy at Fairhaven last month.
The
Spanish are sending a strong squad including 18 year old Xavier
Guzman, who won all his four matches at Walton heath. His teammates,
Sebastian Garcia-Grout and Carlos Aguilar are also playing along
with Raul Ballesteros, son of Baldomiro and nephew of Seve.
Adding
to the overseas challenge will be players from Belgium, Holland
and Germany so the 132 strong field Represents most of the leading
Under 18 players in Europe.
