Godfrey in Six ManTeam For New Spanish Event
The English Golf Union is expanding its policy of providing young
players with experience of international competition by sending
a six-man team to compete in a new four-nation tournament in Spain.
The First International Match Costa Ballena Golf, also involving
teams from Germany, Sweden and Spain, will be played at the new
Golf Club Costa Ballena near Cadiz from 14th to 16th November.
English champion Scott Godfrey, 20, and international colleague
Paul Bradshaw will spearhead England's challenge and will be backed
by boy caps Scott Jackson, David Porter, Daniel Wardrop, and Ben
Welch.
Cornishman Godfrey won the English Amateur Championship at Saunton
in July and made his England senior debut in September's Home Internationals
at Woodhall Spa.
Bradshaw, 22, from Lincolnshire, also celebrated his first cap
at Woodhall Spa, helping England regain the title, but an injury
kept him out of the Lincolnshire side for the English County Finals
at Burnham & Berrow in September.
Hampshire-based Porter, the England boy captain, and Wardrop have
just been drafted into the England national training squad after
successful seasons. Porter, 18, led England to victory in the Boys
Home Internationals at Moortown and to third place in the European
Boys Team Championships in Poland. He has been on the international
scene since 1997. Wardrop, from Cheshire, was a team-mate of Porter's
for both international competitions. He recently triumphed in the
Greek Amateur at Glyfada, and the 18 year old came close to winning
the Luxus European Under-21 Championship at Turnberry only to be
beaten in a play-off by Scotland's Barry Hume.
Jackson, 18, was a team-mate of Porter's in the World Junior Golf
Team Championships in Japan this summer as well as in the European
Boys Team Championships in Poland. Like Godfrey,
Welch is Cornwall based and played for England Boys in the 1999
season. A month ago he helped St Mellion, win the English Champion
Club tournament at Minchinhampton. The Spanish competition will
be played on a round robin basis, each match comprising three morning
foursomes and six afternoon singles.
Each team will spend a week at Costa Ballena, with practice days
on the 12th and 13th November followed by the three competition
days and an Am-Am on the 17th November.
