GOLF FOUNDATION ANNUAL AWARDS

 

The Golf Foundation recognised the achievements of several talented individuals at its Annual Awards ceremony held at The Wentworth Club recently.

Outstanding Achievement Awards were presented to Sophie Walker (16) and David Inglis (18). During 2000 Sophie reduced her handicap from 4 to 1 and won numerous competitions including the English Girls Championship and the Daily Telegraph Championship. David finished the year playing off +2 having won the British Boys Open. He also played in the Great Britain and Ireland Team.

Most Improved Awards went to Melanie Peake (14) and Martyn Hamer (15). Melanie started the year with no handicap and finished the year playing off 14. She was a member of the WLGU Junior Winter Training Squad. Martyn reduced his handicap from 13 to 2, finished 3rd in the English Schools Championship and is a member of the England Boys squad.

Christine Allen (15) received the Special Needs Award due to her determination to overcome the difficulties that having cerebral palsy presents. She plays regularly and has a weekly golf lesson at Brampton Heath Golf Club in Northamptonshire.

Alex and Dianne Brown were presented with the Sir Henry Cotton Award in recognition of the enormous amount of time and effort they put into developing junior golf on the island of Islay in Scotland. Also, Millfield Golf Club, Lincolnshire, was presented with the Gus Payne Trophy having raised an incredible £4,000 for the Foundation, and retiring PGA Professional John Amos of Piltdown Golf Club was given special recognition for his fund-raising efforts over many years.

A new Development Award was given to Epping Golf Centre were with limited facilities a comprehensive development programme for juniors has been established.
