Westwood Lays Down
Foundation Challenge

Lee Westwood is the new face of the Golf Foundation's 'Charity Challenge' fund-raising initiative.

Golfers will be challenged to return a net score in one of their club medal competitions between April and July which is less than Westwood's first-round score in the Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Participants will receive a golf ball and those who are successful will win a certificate signed by the European No 1. The money raised via the entry fees will help the Golf Foundation in its work to develop junior golf. Last year, just under 10,000 British golfers participated, generating more than £15,000.

Westwood said: "The Golf Foundation played an important role in my early
career and I'm delighted to help in this way."

Westwood attended coaching lessons at Worksop Golf Club supported by the
Golf Foundation and was a Weetabix age group champion in 1987 (under-15)
and 1988 (under-16).

Sir Michael Bonallack will succeed Bernard Gallacher when he completes
his five-year term as president of the Golf Foundation in May. Sir Michael, who is currently a vice-president, was chairman of the Golf Foundation from 1977-83. Once he has stepped down from the presidency, Gallacher will join the Golf Foundation's executive committee. Carol Macdonald, 28, a former sports development officer in both Bedfordshire and Middlesex, is the Golf Foundation's new regional development officer for the South-East.

The Golf Foundation's merit award scheme, which was revised and relaunched in March 1998, issued just under 18,000 certificates in 2000 - a 2.1 per cent increase on the previous year's figure. Around 190 pupils at 13 secondary and primary schools in North Devon will each receive 10 hours of free tuition from local professional John Phillips this year - following the success of last season's programme which culminated in a tournament for the youngsters which was screened by Sky Sports.

A programme of Junior Golf Leaders Award courses, for teachers who want
to introduce youngsters to golf, has been organised for the first half
of the year. Dates and venues: Feb 12-13 and 19-20 - The Belfry; Feb 18
