WELSH GOLFING UNION:
PORTUGAL 2000

The Welsh Golfing Union Elite Squad travel to Portugal on the 5 March for their annual winter trainig camp and will be overseen by David Llewellyn the National Coach and Andy Ingram the recently appointed Welsh Team Captain.

The squad will practice and play at Quinta do Peru Golf Club, which is situated in Setubal near Lisbon. This is the fifth year in succession that the squad will use the course and its wonderful practice facilities, with good balls on the double-ended range, well prepared greens for putting, chipping, pitching and bunker play.

The course itself provides a stiff challenge to the players and puts emphasis on accuracy from the tee and the short game as the greens are heavily bunkered and are severely contoured.

The players will be expected to use the opportunity to hone their skills ready for the start of the domestic season adn will have a hectic schedule to follow, rising at 6.00am and leaving the course at 6.00pm after a full day of practice and competitive play.

The week will involve four rounds of stroke play and an international match against the Portuguese National Team, which will involve 6 foursomes and 12 singles matches.

The squad that will travel to Portugal is:

Richard Brookman - Creigiau
Ian Campbell - Marlborough
Jamie Donaldson - Macclesfield
Nigel Edwards - Whitchurch
Matthew Griffiths - Woodlake Park
Lee Harpin - North Wales
Neil Matthews - Pontypool
David Price - Bargoed
Oliver Pughe - Oswestry
