Mawji Sets a New World Record in Golf.
13 year old,
Abbas-Ali Mawji took on a star studded field of international golfers
in a very difficult wind and rain swapped conditions over the weekend
of 18-19 November 2000 to carve a niche in history for himself.
He becomes the
youngest in the world to ever qualify for a national Open. Lewis
Chitingwa, son of wingate resident pro Lewis Muridzo, held that
record until today. Mawji who is a heritage student and ironically
also student of Muridzo. Mawji succeeded with an excellent round
of 75 & 74 to win a place in the Zimbabwe Open 2000.
When asked how
does he felt about breaking world record he said, "Naturally I feel
a sense of relief . I have proved to myself that I can take on the
best and stay in par with them. I have lots of work ahead me before
I can set other new standards in golf for all to achieve."
Abbas-Ali Mawji,
with tongue in cheek, has this advice for aspiring youngsters. "Choose
the right parents and than convince them that you are the best.
