HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM UP TO LEAD GOLF CLUB

A mid Wales Golf Club certainly believes in keeping it in the family!

Penrhos Golf & Country Club in Llanrhystud is run by Rees-Evans family which is made up of three sets of husband and wife teams.

And now, the club has also elected a husband and wife team as golf captains for 2000!

Unlike many golf clubs, Penrhos does not have any special rules about when men and women can play golf, nor has restricted access to certain areas of the club.

“We’ve got a lot of husband and wife golf club members.  We have no restrictions on women members like a number of golf clubs do.  We believe in equality and I don’t that any such restrictions would be welcomed by patrons at Penrhos, nor by our own wives who play an integral role in the running of the club,” said Penrhos Director, Rowland Rees-Evans.

Jeff and Marian Morgan from Llanon have been members of Penrhos Golf & Country Club since it opened nearly 10 years ago.

“Its not as if it’s club policy to insist on a husband and wife team in all situations, in fact Jeff and Marian are the first husband and wife captain’s we have had.  They work well together and I believe that Jeff views the partnership very much as we do here – let the wife have the last word!” said Rowland.

So far the golf captains have had a good year – although they’ve yet to head the Penrhos Open Week and Captain’s Day’s which take place in August and September.

Commenting Jeff Morgan said, “Marian and I work well as a team and both have a passion for golf, so it seems natural that we head the golf club teams together.”

There will be no rivalry however, as mens and ladies teams work as independent bodies and each have their own competitions and events.  Which questioned as to who was the better golfer, Jeff has no hesitation in replying.

“I have been playing golf for many years, whilst Marian took up the sport when Penrhos opened in 1990.  However, she is a very good golfer and I have to say that it is a great challenge to play against her,” Jeff obviously knows his rightful place in the relationship!
