ROYAL & ANCIENT GOLF CLUB OF ST ANDREWS:
PLAYERS SELECTED FOR SQUAD SESSION

Five of the players who were members of the GB&I team which won the Walker Cup at Nairn form the nucleus of a squad of 21 players to meet at Turnberry on 18-19 April.

Paul Casey, Luke Donald, David Patrick, Phillip Rowe and Gary Wolstenholme all played their part in the 15-9 win over the USA, resulting in both the Walker Cup and the Eisenhower Trophy, won late in 1998 by GB&I in Chile, residing on British soil.

Several younger players have been named in the squad including Nick Dougherty and Barry Hume, both of whom played for GB&I boys in the 1999 Jacques Leglise Trophy at Burnham & Berrow, plus David Griffiths, Craig Williams and Mark Loftus who, with Dougherty as the fourth member, finished second in the Audi World Masters in Berlin last September.

Peter Benka, Chairman of the R&A Selection Committee said, "After our tremendous success last year, it is important to maintain the momentum by continuing our squad system to prepare for the St Andrews Trophy and our defence of the Eisenhower Trophy. Although we have lost a few names to the pro ranks, I am very confident about the season ahead and the quality of the players we have in the squad. There are however still opportunities for those not listed."

The St Andrews Trophy will be played over the Ailsa Course at Turnberry on 30 June - 1 July and the World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy over the Sporting Club, Berlin from 31 August - 3 September. Peter McEvoy will continue as Captain, having already been nominated to lead the Walker Cup team in 2001.
