17 ROUNDS OF GOLF IN ONE DAY
FOR MACMILLAN CANCER RELIEF

Sue Barry is certainly a keen golfer and she demonstrated this when she undertook a dawn to dusk golf marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief. Sue began the marathon at 4am and played until 8.30pm when she had clocked up an impressive 17 rounds of golf raising a record £16,830.

The marathon took place in late June as part of a Tesco fundraising golf day at the Manor of Groves Golf and Country Club in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.

To support Sue’s efforts, sports and television celebrity, Emlyn Hughes attended the day and was on hand to encourage both Sue and the other golf players.

Sue works at the Tesco Head Office in Hertfordshire and is well practised at picking up her clubs for charity and has undertaken the marathon for several years. This year she broke her goal of playing 300 holes and in fact played 306. Sue was sponsored per hole and had 55 sponsors who each sponsored her £1 per hole.

Sue said: “ The whole event was a great success for everyone involved – a real team effort supported even by those left back at work. All I had to do was keep hitting the balls. The money raised was well above my expectations but evidence of everyone’s hard work and support.”

As well as Sue’s fundraising marathon, money was raised from a golf competition with around 30 teams competing. The overall amount raised for Macmillan, the Tesco Charity of the Year from the golf day was £42,860.
