Snead
to Lead Open Champions' Gala
Past
champions are to take part in a unique event to mark the first Open
of the new millennium
at St Andrews. Invitations
have gone out to all 27 living champions to participate in a four-hole
event over the
opening two and closing two holes of the Old Course on the eve of
this year's championship.
From
Sam Snead in 1946 to defending champion Paul Lawrie, these past
champions hold 46 Open
titles between them. The event, with a semi-competitive format,
will take place at 4.30pm
on Wednesday, July 19 - the final practice day before the championship
begins.
R&A
secretary Peter Dawson said: "The R&A feels that a few
holes over the Old Course is a fitting
way to allow the public to be part of a celebration of the Open
Championship in this special
year and to honour players who have contributed so much to the game.
"We
are certain that a large turnout of champions will contribute to
what should be a wonderful
spectacle."
BBC
Television will cover the event live and tickets will cost £18 for
adults, £9 for senior citizens
and £8 for youths aged between 16-21.
