Britain's
Oldest Competitive Golfer?
Howard
Singleton, a 97-year-old member of Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, could
become the oldest competitive golfer in Britain when he takes part
in the Lawrence Batley Over-80s tournament at Royal Mid Surrey on
June 5.
The
former captain and president of the Dorset Society of Golf Captains
still plays at least three times a week off a 27 handicap.
Among
the other over-90s taking part in the tournament are Tom Galloway
and brothers Bert and Thomas Truckle.
Over-80s
tournaments are often viewed as social events but playing standards
can be high with 36 points more often than not outside the prizes.
