TRIO TO FACE ITALY UNDER-16
Three Yorkshire
teenagers have been named in the four-strong England team for the
Under-16 International with Italy at Nigel at Nigel Mansell’s Woodbury
Park Golf Club in Devon on 4th July.
Simon Bell (Northcliffe),
Chris Clarke (Wath), and Michael Skelton (Hunley Hall) will be
joined by Eren Behcet (Langley Park) for the annual one-day match,
which immediately proceeds the English Boys’ Under-16 Open Amateur
Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy at the same venue.
The reserve is Jonathan Petrou (Muswell Hill).
Bell, 15, played
for the England Under-16 side against Scotland at Drumoig and the
England Girl’s Under-18’s at workshop last year, finished third
in the 1999 Mc Gregor Trophy and in the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship
in Florida and is a member of the EGU’s School of Excellence.
Clarke, 15,
finished runner-up in the 1998 Golf Foundation Weetabix Under-15
competition and was fifth in this year’s McEvoy Trophy. He has
benefited from EGU coaching from the past two years.
Skelton, 15,
was the Golf Foundation Under-15 champion in 1998, Yorkshire Boys’
Under-16 champion and runner-up in the British Boys last year and
was also a member of the Yorkshire team that reached the English
Boys’ County Finals. He is also a member of the School of Excellence
and has benefited from EGU coaching for the past two years.
Behcet, 16,
played in this match a year ago at Fairhaven as well as against
Scotland and the Under-18 Girls. A Former Kent Boys’ champion,
he was runner-up in the English Under-14 Reid Trophy in 1998 and
won the Douglas Johns Trophy last year. He is also a member of
the School of Excellence.
This will be
the fifth playing of the match against the Italians and England
has won three of the previous four, the inaugural meeting at Radcliffe-on-Trent
finishing 3-3.
