GROOMING
THE UK’S FUTURE GOLFING STARS
Team England
and Team Wales were officially launched today (28 July 2000) with
the signing of a number of top English and Welsh golfing talents.
The management group that has groomed some of Scotland’s best young
golfers through various tournament victories over the past five
years and boasts Sandy Lyle as their World Consultant, is set to
bring the same style of talent development to England and Wales.
Two of the recently
signed Team England squad, Simon Lilly and Guy Woodman, made the
final qualifying stages of this year’s British Open. On signing
for the Team England squad, Guy Woodman of Stoke Poges Club, comments:
“This is a real positive step forward in my career as a professional.
You only have to look at how the Scottish players have excelled
under the guidance of Team Scotland. Already we have received product
sponsorship from Lyle & Scott, Sunderland of Scotland and Umbro.
I’m looking forward to improving my game and performing well on
the tour circuit with the help of Team England.”
Team Scotland
was set up in 1995 with the aim of developing talented golfers into
successful tour professionals. Over the last five years Team Scotland
has guided over 20 players to 15 tournament victories, at a variety
of levels worldwide, as well as over 50 top 10 finishes.
Lee Paget, Craig
Evans and Stuart Roberts have all been signed for Team Wales. The
aim is to have six players in each ‘Team’. Stephen Govenlock, managing
director of the ‘Team’ brand explains: “The philosophy is simple,
by focusing our strengths and resources on six golfers in each country,
we can provide expert personal help in the critical areas of their
development. That is from advice on equipment to guidance on where
and when to play, through assistance with travel and securing both
product and financial support.
“Team Scotland
has a record of producing winners at various levels. We aim to continue
this with the development of new players in Team England and Team
Wales”.
