R&A
Grants For Amateurs
The Royal &
Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew's is
introducing a new policy which they hope will encourage players
to delay becoming professional.
From the beginning
of 2001, education grants will cover tuition, course books and fees
and also include room and board for study at a school, college or
university in the UK & Ireland. The scheme is similar to that
which currently operates in the United States.
David Rickman,
the Rules Secretary of the R&A, stated: "It is hoped that, subject
to attracting the necessary funding, golfers will be encouraged
to stay in the educational system longer and remain amateur longer."
Up until now
any grants offered have been for entirely golf related expenses,
this move should give the same opportunity for good amateurs to
remain in the UK for their further education rather than swelling
the American ranks.
