WOMEN
AIM TO RAISE "GRAN-TASTIC"
AMOUNT ON WORLDWIDE CHALLENGE
Two
East Yorkshire grandmothers with a taste for adventure are flying
to the other side of the world to take part in a series of weird
and wonderful challenges in aid of charity.
On
Tuesday 25 January, Jackie Swinbourne and Sue Dearnley said goodbye
to Hull and hello to the Hakka as part of their efforts to raise
money for improving breast cancer treatment in the area.
Taking
part in a Hakka - the famous New Zealand chant performed by the
All Black rugby team before matches on the first tee of a golf course
is one of the eight tasks the intrepid duo must complete during
their two-month trek in aid of WATCH (Women Abreast Tackle Cancer
in Hull).
The
other challenges facing the two golfing enthusiasts include:
- Drinking
three "Singapore-Sling" cocktails at the world-famous
Raffles Hotel - each paid for by different guests, all of whom
must be resident at the hotel.
- Playing a
round of golf in Perth scoring not less than 28 stableford points
- Playing a
round of golf in Sydney while drinking four pints of Castlemaine
XXXX
- Playing a
medal round in Cairns - keeping an 8 off the card
- Playing one
hole of golf in Brisbane while blindfolded
- Finding someone
to donate their national costume in Fiji and attempting to play
a round of golf in it
The final destination
before the long flight home is Los Angeles, where Jackie and Sue
will walk down Rodeo Drive with a begging bowl. Their view is that
if that does not work, nothing will.
Jackie and Sue,
both 55, hatched their "Grannies on Tour" idea in a bid
to not only raise money to fight breast cancer, but also to raise
awareness of the needs of those women who suffer from the disease.
More than £8,000 has already been pledged - and the pair hope
that their endeavours will trigger further donations to WATCH whilst
they are away.
As a testimony,
the completion of each task will be signed by a witness so there
is a record for all to confirm the two have achieved their intended
goal.
In addition
to these sponsored events, the pair will also tour local bars and
restaurants seeking donations from the locals.
