GOLF FOR KIDS
Schoolchildren
in mid-Wales have hit a hole in one on their school summer holidays
with a project put together by a local leisure club to provide sports
facilities for local children during the summer.
Penrhos
Golf and Country Club near Llanryhstud is giving free golf lessons
and membership to the 9 hole golf course during the week to every
local young person under 12 years old.
"The
school holidays should be a time for excitement, getting outdoors
and learning new skills in a safe and friendly atmosphere,"
said Penrhos G&CC Director, Huw Rees-Evans.
The
project was first run last year and following its success, the leisure
club has declared that it should run annually.
"The
free lessons were such a great success last year. The turn-out was
very encouraging with some of the children continuing to use the
practice range long after the summer holidays were over. There is
great potential in some of the players and we hope this project
will encourage more children to take up the sport." said Huw.
The
scheme will run from 9am twice a week. Two hours of lessons are
given in the morning then the children are free to carry on playing
on the 9 hole course.
"Whether
they have great ambitions of taking up the sport professionally
or just want to play as a hobby, the children have free membership
and are welcome to play here at any time", said Rees-Evans.
The
project intends to give children the opportunity to try a new sport
which is not on the average school curriculum. The only condition
is that members must be novice golfers under the age of 12 and not
belong to any other golf clubs.
All
those budding Tiger Woods interested in the free lessons should
contact Huw Rees-Evans or Paul Diamond on 01974 202999.
