EGU
Name Flanders as New President
The man behind the English Golf Union's Woodhill Spa home in Lincolnshire,
has been named its new Millennium president.
John Flanders,
who has been involved with the EGU since 1981, takes over the reins
from Peter Wilson. A distinguished player who represented Derbyshire
for over 30 years, Flanders is relishing the challenges ahead.
"This is
the greatest thing I've done for English amateur golf," he
said. "I was chairman for 11 years and during that time the
game exploded dramatically. Something had to be done and now it
gives me a thrill to see what has been achieved at Woodhill Spa."
Meanwhile,
former president Basil Steer died of a heart attack, aged 70, after
collapsing during the EGU's AGM at Woodhill Spa. Devon-born Steer,
who beat Nick Faldo and Gordon Brown Jnr during their
amateur days, took up the game at Tavistock Golf Club in 1956 and
went on to represent Devon for over 20 years
