"Free Golf Coaching" A Huge
Success as EGU Plan National Campaign

The English Golf Union, the governing body of mens amateur golf in England, has received huge success with its new coaching scheme aimed at introducing more people to the game of golf. The initiative sponsored by leading equipment manufacturer Prosimmon, which has also received Sportsmatch funding, offers FREE golf coaching for beginners.

In conjunction with Burhill Golf Centres, free golf coaching for beginners on 20th February 2000 at Ramsdales Park Golf Centre, Nottinghamshire, Hoebridge Golf Centre, Surrey and Thornbury Golf Centre, Gloucestershire was oversubscribed. Participant figures were well in excess of 60 per venue, bringing the total to 200 for the weekend. All venues agreed it was a massive success, but it doesn't stop there.

The English Golf Union invests regularly in the development of golf at grass roots level and as Paul Baxter, EGU Secretary states: "Coaching is a vital ingredient to the enjoyment of the game. This initiative will introduce more people into the game, help their understanding of the basic skills and encourage a long term interest in the game."

The English Golf Union is planning to launch the scheme nationwide at venues around England throughout the year. It is anticipated that thousands of beginners will benefit through the scheme, which will offer a pathway to continue participation in the game of golf and hopefully progress to golf club membership.

The coaching is conducted by fully qualified professional coaches, with group lessons lasting for one hour (five beginners per hour). Golf clubs and practice balls are provided. A full list of venues and dates will be published soon and no matter what age, people will simply be asked to phone up and book a time.
