Associate Membership Scheme

The English Golf Union’s grass roots initiative called Associate Membership is designed to encourage all standards of golfers, young and old, male or female to take up the game of golf. It also provides an opportunity for the casual golfer who is not a member of a golf club to obtain an official English Golf Union or English Ladies’ Golf Association Associate Membership handicap.

The Associate Membership scheme educates its member’s on the Rules and Etiquette of golf, whilst providing benefits such as a membership card, handicap certificate, bag tag, starter pack - including a guide to 1890 golf courses in England, quarterly newsletter, regional competitions, coaching days and the opportunity to play on golf courses normally closed to the non handicap golfer.

The overall aim of this grass roots initiative is to provide Associate Members with an easier pathway through to golf club membership, overcoming the catch 22 situation – whereby, you can only join a golf club if you have a handicap and can only obtain a handicap if you are a golf club member!

As one of the largest golfing organisations in the world, it is the English Golf Union’s responsibility to continue to ‘open up more golfing opportunities’ in order to promote, administer and encourage men’s amateur golf in England.
