St
Andrews Bunkers Refaced
All
of the Old Course's 112 bunkers have been given a facelift in preparation
for the Open Championship
at St Andrews in July.
From
the notorious Road Hole Bunker by the 17th green to the innocuous
Kruger on the 9th, every
individual bunker was stripped down and the sides refaced. Three
of the largest bunkers
- Hell, Shell and Cottage - were rebuilt using railway sleepers
sunk into concrete.
General
manager Alan McGregor praised his greenkeeping team, saying: "This
is the first time
all the bunkers have been renewed together, usually they are repaired
on a five-year rolling
programme."
Meanwhile,
the Millennium Open's official range of golfwear is on sale through
the St Andrews Links Trust website - www.standrews.org.uk.
The range
includes high quality knitwear and shirts bearing the logoes of
both the St Andrews Links
and the Old Claret Jug. For more information, call 01334-466666.
