Brewerton
Balances Exams with Curtis Cup
Becky
Brewerton, the 17-year old bright spark at the heart of amateur
golf's resurgence in Wales,
is working hard on her A levels despite distractions such as the
Curtis Cup at Ganton on
June 24-25, writes Robin Barwick.
The
youngest golfer to win the Welsh and British Ladies Amateur Strokeplay
titles, which she did
last year, Brewerton has been voted BBC Wales Junior Sports Personality
of the Year.
It
is not easy, though, when a golfer in such demand is trying to combine
a flourishing golf career
with an excellent academic one.
"I've
had to take a lot of time off school recently, but my teachers are
very supportive and help
me out of class," said Brewerton, who will be one of the youngest
players to play for Great
Britain & Ireland against the United States in the biennial
contest.
"I've
got A level maths modules the week before the Curtis Cup, which
are important because
they go towards my final grade. Luckily they finish the day before
team practice starts."
Brewerton,
who has already dropped one A level course to devote more time to
golf, still has a
year to go with her maths and history courses. The golf season though,
is approaching its most
important period. "I'm really trying to peak in time for the
big events, such as the Curtis Cup,
and I'm happy with how my form is going at the moment."
