Royal
Deal for Brabazon
The Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club at Deal has been confirmed as the
venue for the 2002 English Men's Open Strokeplay Championship.
It will be the third time the Brabazon Trophy has been contested
over the famous Kent links and maintains the tradition of staging
the event at a prestigious course.
The championship
was first held at Royal Cinque Ports in 1964 when former
Royal & Ancient Golf Club secretary Sir Michael Bonalleck won
by four clear
strokes. Indeed, his second round score of 65 still stands as a
course record.
European Tour golfer Mark Davis scooped the honours at the venue
in 1984 by
three strokes.
And England
amateur international Peter Fenton was crowned champion the last
time the competition was held in Kent, at Royal St George's, Sandwich.
