BRABAZON TROPHY MOVES TO
ROYAL CINQUE PORTS IN 2002

The English Open Mens’ Open Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy will be played at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club at Deal in May 2002.

The Club Committee’s agreement to stage the Championship over the famous Kent links in two years time maintains the tradition of the event being played at prestigious venues.

This year the Brabazon Trophy was staged at the EGU’s headquarters at Woodhall Spa and next year it is scheduled for Royal Berkshire.

The 2002 championship will be the third at Royal Cinque Ports. It was first held there in 1964 when ex-R&A Secretary, Michael Bonallack emerged triumphantly, four strokes clear of fellow internationals Michael Burgess, Brian Stockdale, and Alan Thirwelll. In round two, Bonallack carded a course record of 65, which still stands today.

Then in 1984 the winner was Mark Davis from Essex, now a member of the PGA European Tour, who finished three strokes ahead of Yorkshire’s Stephen East, still a formidable force in the amateur game and the current holder of the Logan Trophy.

The Brabazon was last staged in Kent in 1996 at Royal St George’s, Sandwich when another Yorkshire man, England international Peter Fenton was crowned champion.
