Scottish Amateur Championship:
Sound start for Hume
By Peter Donald
The Electronic Telegraph

SINCE winning the Scottish boys' title by a record 13 strokes last summer Barry Hume, of Haggs Castle, has filled the runner-up spot in four championships - a sequence he is determined to end in this week's Johnnie Walker Scottish Amateur Championship at Royal Dornoch.

The 19-year-old West of Scotland golfer was second in the European men's individual championship at Celtic Manor last year and this season has been runner-up in the Scottish men's, youths' and boys' strokeplay titles. He made a sound start to breaking that run yesterday when he scored a 5 & 4 win over one of last year's semi-finalists, Gregor Munro, of Ranfurly Castle.

"I hit a few bad shots," he said, "but none of them was too bad. I must have been in seven or eight bunkers, but my putting was really good." In fact, he got up and down from one bunker at the 529-yard ninth to win the hole with a birdie and establish a three-hole lead. After going four up at the 11th, he collected another birdie by getting down in two from off the green at the 12th to establish his winning margin.

Hume playsfor Scotland against Italy in a men's international at Panmure in two weeks. Finnish players Erik Stenman and Kaisa Ruutilla led their respective tournaments at the Doug Sanders European junior championships over the King's Links, Aberdeen yesterday. Stenman shot a five-under-par 66 to lead the boys' and Ruutilla matched that score to top the girls' leaderboard.
