Hampshire students to be Young Ambassadors at BMW PGA Championship

21st May 2013

Five students from the University of Winchester are to become volunteer Young Ambassadors at this week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club.
Luke Warren, Alicia Currie, Eleanor Deakin, Connor Brienn and Matthew Butler will work alongside the top golfers at the championship, assisting them on the range and practice areas.
The Sports Studies students have already been involved with a project funded by Hampshire Golf Partnership to encourage girls aged 14-plus to get into golf. They've been working under the guidance of South Winchester PGA coach Michael Mulligan, and have helped to “sell” the project at school assembly and taken part in taster and coaching sessions.

The students were encouraged to apply to become Young Ambassadors at the BMW PGA Championship by their course tutor Richard Cheetham. They will join 10 other volunteers from across the South East for the project, which is run by Surrey Golf Partnership and supported by the PGA European Tour and Wentworth Club.

Beverly Huke, the Hampshire Golf Partnership's Development Officer said: “We are thrilled with the commitment and enthusiasm that all five students have shown.

“They deserve this bonus of working with our colleagues in Surrey at this world class golf championship.  We hope the total experience will prove to be not only enjoyable, but also an excellent addition to their CVs when they enter the world of work.”

Connor Brienn commented: "We are all really excited by this opportunity to work with the pros at this huge event and gaining new experiences."
Hampshire County Golf Partnership supports events and a variety of activities around the county to encourage more girls and women to take up the sport through the national Get into golf campaign.  Full details about these and other free and low-cost initiatives to encourage more people to play golf can be found by clicking on the activity map at
