Rockliffe Hall Golf Club's inaugural competition for amateur golfers across the North East and North Yorkshire has received such a high volume of applications that the club is to hold qualification events.

Rockliffe Hall in Hurworth, County Durham is giving amateur golfers the chance to be crowned the best in the region and now, due to the overwhelming number of applications to the Northern Golf Masters, 20 places have been made available for two qualifying events to give more people the chance to take part.

The qualifiers will take place on Sunday 5 th August and Sunday 12 th August with tee times available from 8am on both days.

Registration is now open and will close on Monday 30 th April. Visit to enter. Qualification for category 1 golfers across the North of England is complimentary.

Rockliffe Hall's Tour Professional, Graeme Storm, officially launched the Northern Golf Masters Tournament at Rockliffe Hall Golf Club on April 3 rd giving the best club golfers across Teesside, County Durham, North Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Cumbria the chance represent their club and be named the number one amateur golfer in the North of England.

The tournament itself, which will become an annual event, will take place on Sunday 19 th August 2012 at Rockliffe Hall, home to the UK's longest golf course.

The scratch competition for category one golfers will adopt the format of a professional tour event with first tee announcements, ball spotters and up-to-the-minute live scoring.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place and the event is already attracting key sponsors.

Over 100 people will take part in the Northern Golf Masters, which is free to enter, and concessionary rates for practice rounds are available for anyone confirmed as participating.

Speaking about the success so far of the Northern Golf Masters, Graeme Storm said: "It's great that this type of annual amateur tournament has been organised for golfers across the region and I'm not at all surprised about the overwhelming number of entries as these types of competitions are few and far between. Rockliffe Hall is an ideal course and venue as it offers state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best courses I have played in the world."

Director of golf at Rockliffe Hall, Ian Knight, added: "We were confident of getting enough entrants to the Northern Golf Masters but didn't expect as many so soon after its launch hence we've decided to launch qualifying events to give more people a chance to take part. Hopefully the tournament will be a great stepping stone for those that do well. It's also an amazing opportunity for us to showcase our facilities to golfers who may not have had the chance to play here and introduce them and their families to what we have to offer."

The format of the event will be as follows: -

•  A rolling three-ball start running from 8am-2pm

•  The competition is open to all category one players, with a handicap of five or better, and should be nominated by their host club.

•  The format is best gross score to name the best player overall

•  A trophy presentation will be made at 7.30pm on the evening of the tournament

Practice rounds are available for entrants at the members' guest rate of £30 per person - if accompanied by three guests to make up a four ball, one place will be complimentary. To book, contact the Pro Shop on 01325 729980.
