FORMBY GOLF CLUB - EXCITING REFURBISHMENT
30th January 2012

Award winning Chester-based interior designer, Mark Gillette, has recently completed the first phase of the refurbishment of Formby Golf Club, one of the most outstanding of the eight top-notch links courses located between the seaside town of St. Annes and the City of Liverpool.

Founded in 1884, the Club has seen many changes over the years and the current Club Council were keen to make some significant refurbishment and structural changes to reflect modern tastes but retain the Club's heritage.

The first phase was the total refurbishment of the Hall Bar and the Golfers' Bar.  Mark's team, working with Liverpool-based architect Nick Ellis, looked at the existing Arts and Crafts elements of the building and introduced more details to reference this turn of the century art movement.  Inspired by the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens and Voysey, Mark tidied up much of the messier architectural additions that had been added over time.  A plaster ceiling design was created for the Club Room, along with period style light fittings and oak was used extensively to draw together all the design elements.  Wool tweeds were used for curtaining and combined with wooden Venetian blinds look very much on trend.

Mark designed the carpet, which was woven in the UK.  The design is unique to the Club - a large-scale modern plaid in smart shades of cigar, Amber and terracotta.

The most dramatic change has been to the bar itself:  a new marble top, mirrored back walls and the front faced in duck-egg blue ceramic wall tiles which reference the period of the building.

The result is a fresh, smart and modern clubhouse that truly reflects the quality of this world-renowned course.

Club members are extremely pleased with the results:  "We are delighted with the design solutions that Mark and his team have created," said Club Secretary, Geoff Norton.
