ESSEX TALENT DAY FINDS PROMISING GIRL GOLFERS A new talent-spotting day for girl golfers prompted dozens of promising Essex youngsters to come forward and show off their skills. The day was organised by the Essex Golf Partnership as part of its County Academy Programme (CAP), which identifies and coaches boys and girls with the potential to reach county standard.
This event, at Millers Barn Golf Club, Clacton-on-Sea , was the first girls-only session and is helping to boost the numbers coming forward. The day attracted 37 girls while others will take part in another talent-spotting session at Three Rivers Golf and Country Club, near Chelmsford . Qualifiers will receive coaching at either Three Rivers or Frinton Golf Club. The girls at Millers Barn won the praise of Sarah Bennett, one of the CAP lead coaches for the day, as they showed off their skills at putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers and the long game. 'It was absolutely superb to see that number of girls, all enjoying themselves and reaching a high standard,' said Sarah. 'The aim is to move as many girls as possible up to the Essex Elite Squad which I currently coach." Sarah ran the day with fellow lead coach Scott Rusbridge, helped by two assistant coaches and a number of Essex county lady officials and other volunteers. Altogether, 255 girls and boys have registered for CAP sessions with the boys' assessment events taking place at North Weald on 29 January and South Essex on 5 February. A total of 160 youngsters will be nominated for further coaching which will take place throughout the year.
