Greg Tickell wins East Midlands Championship

Derby College student, Greg Tickell was crowned East Midlands Collegiate Golf Champion on Wednesday at Morley Hayes Golf & Leisure complex. Tickell returned an excellent one under par round of 71 over the demanding par 72 championship course at Morley Hayes under extremely testin weather conditions.

Greg, a Welsh Boy International, finished 4 shots ahead of Derby College team mate Jake Conoley and the rest of the 56 strong field of competitors from colleges around the East Midlands.

Greg put in a consistent performance, reaching the turn in level par 36 having, his only real blemish was a bogey on the ninth, he finished his round off in great style firing a 2 iron uphill into the wind on the 18 th to two feet and converted the putt for a well-deserved closing birdie.

Greg commented; "I really enjoyed it out there, my preparation for today was good, I spent some quality time on the range and putting green before I teed it up and that paid dividends. I am now looking forward to representing Derby College in the national finals next spring".

Derby College C team won the 4 man team event to become East Midlands Champions, best three net scores to count from the four man team, with Jake Conoley returning 75-6-69 for the best net score of the day supported by Charley Mycock 79-6-73 & Harry Huckerby 87-11-76 for a team total of 218, two strokes ahead of Derby B on 220. This completed a clean sweep on the day for Derby College.

The event hosted by the East Midlands Colleges forms part of the British Colleges Golf Championship with the top 4 players male and female progressing to the National finals next spring at Loughborough University. Tickell (71) and Conoley (75) will also be joined by fellow team members Jordan Barker (76) and Will Painter (77) in the boys event.

All 4 are members of the PERFORMANCE GOLF ACADEMY DERBY programme, run in partnership with Derby College. The programme is having a positive effect on the students and their golf preparation as this is the first time Derby College have had representatives in the national finals of the British Colleges golf championships.

PERFORMANCE GOLF ACADEMY DERBY programme manager Nigel Furniss commented;

"We are pleased with the results from today; they demonstrate the strength of the programme we are delivering to the students. The students have all commented how much the support from the programme is benefiting them, and this is beginning to show in their performances and the results they are achieving".
