In what has been a long standing tradition at Ashton Under Lyne Golf Club, every year the captain arranges a “Captain's Picnic” where members enjoy a day of golf, food, drink and laughter at a course of the Captain's choice. In keeping with this custom Jeremy Hall the 2011 Captain at Ashton-Under-Lyne arranged a day recently at Hesketh Golf Club in Southport.

The Captain's first shot

Over 40 of Ashton's finest members made the crusade to Southport in what turned out to be a great day for everyone, on arrival the group were met with soup and sandwiches before playing 18 holes of 4 ball better ball in the afternoon. The course was in glorious condition and a challenge for everyone their, although the sun shone throughout the day we had a stiff coastal wind to contend with, nevertheless the winning pair of Mike Kelly and Steve Martin managed an admirable score of 40 points.

After playing golf the group washed and changed ahead of an evening of excellent food and hospitality at Hesketh, the following prize presentation then gave the opening for some banter between everyone including the Captain who had to present his own son with the Bucket and Spade prize for the lowest score of the day. Stories of “What, if, but and nearly” then continued in the clubs bar until the coach returned the members to Ashton-Under-Lyne. See you all next year.
