2009 EUROPEAN FATHER & SON CHAMPIONSHIP RELATED STORIES

Worldwide test awaits Father and Son champions

The winners of this year’s European Father and Son Championship will test themselves against some of the best in the world next year after organisers secured a deal for them to play against their counterparts in America and Australia.

In an exciting development for the event, the 2009 handicap and scratch champions will each be invited to play in either the National Father and Son Team Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, or the Australian Father and Son Championships in Tasmania in 2010.

The 2009 European Father and Son Championship will be held for the second year running at the PortAventura Golf Resort on Spain’s Costa Dorada from October 27-November 1 and tournament director Toby Marsden is expecting a fiercely-fought contest following the latest announcement.

“It’s fantastic news that we have secured a relationship with these two organisations,” said Marsden.

“It is something that we have worked very hard for and it will add a real edge to this year’s event. The prospect of playing in America and Australia is enormous for the winners.”

Like its European counterpart, the American and Australian father and son tournaments are 54-hole events and are open to any father and son combinations including grandfathers, stepfathers and professionals with no age restrictions and a handicap limit of 24.

The National Father and Son Classic is the world’s largest father and son competition in the world, with 800 pairs from 44 states and eight countries taking part last year.

This year’s event this month (July) will be the 12th time it has been held in Myrtle Beach, when the 54-hole competition will be staged on 12 of the finest and most popular courses in the golfing paradise.

The Australian Father and Son Championship, to be held at Country Club Tasmania in Launceston in December 2010, is in its infancy, like its European counterpart, and Marsden is relishing the chance for the three events to move forward together.

He added: “As an organisation, we have been working extremely hard to bring the whole concept of fathers playing golf with their sons in a competitive environment together.

“It’s an educational process, but building on our inaugural tournament last year and the latest developments with our US and Australian counterparts, I am confident that we have something that is now going to grow and grow.

“I know this is a tournament that is here to stay, which is a reflection of the great support from our sponsors and also our team.”

In addition, Marsden has also agreed a deal with Motocaddy for the electric trolley company to partner the event in 2009, with four state-of-the-art digital trollies worth around £1,000 to be offered as prizes.

English duo Martin and Connor Hamilton, from The Lambourne Golf Club, Berkshire, is set to return to Spain to defend their European title in October, when more than 100 pairs from countries including France, Germany, Sweden, Ireland, Finland, Wales and the Czech Republic are expected to take part,

Sky Sports TV will televise the event for the second year running and it will again be played on PortAventura’s impressive South and North championship courses – the latter designed by Australian golfing legend Greg Norman.

The cost of the week is just £699 per player with £100 discount for juniors - which includes two rounds of golf each on the North and South courses, five nights’ half-board stay in a four-star hotel within the resort, transfers, evening entertainment, gala dinner and prize-giving on the final night.
